Opuke is the Maori name for Mt Hutt. This dominant feature of the South Canterbury landscape is also the home of Methven Adventures’ innovative Opuke Thermal Pools & Spa.

Having completed the Glacier Hot Pools for Ngai Tahu Tourism on time and within budget, Tony Joseph, Joseph and Associates Project Director, was approached by Methven Adventures in 2009 to guide the Opuke development and has been involved as a strategic advisor ever since.

A highly technical project, the facility needs to be not only supremely functional but beautifully designed. It combines a spectacular client vision with engineering excellence, yet had to be designed to require minimal maintenance and fit within a set capital expenditure.

From initial brief development and stakeholder engagement, to feasibility and business case development, to site selection and energy studies to determine ongoing operational costs, managing design coordination and tender management, the Joseph’s team have been deeply engaged across the board. Fast forward a decade from those first conversations and Joseph & Associates is now managing the construction management of this unique development. Ground works began in December of 2019, with construction kicking off in June 2020.

Ensuring that the project is delivered on time and with within budget will be critical to give the Opuke Thermal Pools & Spa the best chance of success. Construction is currently is on track for Opuke to welcome their first visitors in 2021.

The core team from Joseph & Associates includes:

Project Director – Tony Joseph

Project  Management – Richard Bullett
